1 minute ago by rkfouts on twitter, retweetApple has announced Mac OS X, the new Macintosh operating system which combines the openness of UNIX with the broad applications base of Macintosh.
Mac OS X is built upon an open source UNIX based foundation called Darwin and features true memory protection, pre-emptive multi-tasking and symmetric multi-processing when running on the dual processor Power Mac G4. It also includes Apple's new Quartz 2D graphics engine (based on the Internet standard Portable Document Format) for graphics and broad font support. It also houses OpenGL for 3D graphics, gaming and QuickTime for streaming audio and video. Mac OS X also features an entirely new user interface called Aqua which organises applications, documents and document windows.
Requiring a minimum of 128MB of memory, it is designed to run on Apple products such as the iMac, iBook, Power Macintosh G3, Power Mac G4 Cube and PowerBook . Mac OS X will be available through The Apple Store and through Apple Authorised Resellers beginning, March 24 2001, with prices to be announced shortly. It will be preinstalled as the standard operating system on Macintosh computers beginning July. For more information visit the website at www.apple.com.au.
