A closer look at iOS 5

Apple's iPad is giving Samsung's tablets a run for their money, even in Samsung's home base of Korea.

Sales of the iPad are estimated to have topped 1 million in Korea since the tablet debuted there in November 2010, according to the Korea Herald. Last year's sales alone hit around 700,000.

However, since many Koreans bought the iPad before it was available locally, the total could be much higher than 1 million, noted the Herald.

Samsung does not like to release actual sales figures, but the iPad's share of the Korean market is somewhere between 70 and 80 per cent, far outstripping that of the various Galaxy Tab models, as well as other Android devices.

Around two thirds of the iPads sold in Korea are Wi-Fi only, suggesting to the Herald that consumers don't want to be tied down to data plans with their local carriers.

The news is likely to put smiles on the faces of the higher-ups at Apple, which has been competing with Samsung on a variety of fronts.

The two have been battling for the top spot in the smartphone market, with Apple outscoring Samsung last quarter, but Samsung pulling ahead for the year as a whole.

Both combatants have also been duking it out in the patent courts, with suits and countersuits flying around the world. Apple has launched suits in the US, Germany and in Australia, claiming that Samsung's smartphones and tablets are guilty of patent violation. Samsung in turn has accused Apple of violating key patents related to wireless communications and other technologies.

Apple also kept its lawyers busy last year, arguing that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes upon the design of the iPad. Both sides have pulled out a variety of tricks trying to make their cases, but lately the judges have sided with Samsung.

A Dutch court ruled in favour of the Korean company last month, finding that the Tab is not guilty of patent infringement. And last late week, a German court found that Samsung's revised version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, known as the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, could hit store shelves following a call by Apple to ban the tablet.

Talkback

I dont think it's right to publicly report the Apple and Samsung is in courts "for the top spot in the smartphone market".... as we all know that title belongs to Apple regardless how good the next Galaxy Tab is.
There are 2 advantages that Apple will aways have over Samsung and everyone else:
1. Apple has a patent for making the animation sequence on iOS as a process priority through the CPU, which means Android OS navigation will always be jaggy and not smooth.
2. Only Apple can make money on one customer, long after they purhcased their iPad or iPhone, thanks to the iTunes, App Store and iBooks ecosystem. To investors, that means a good investment.

However you sell it, they're doing exactly as is said here.

"The two have been battling for the top spot in the smartphone market"

If you sell it to yourself differently mate, go for your life. The fact is, that Samsung is infact winning in numbers. Apple's advantage in iOS software smoothness of display is minimal, the Galaxy S2 was a prime example of exactly how android should perform. Its Exynos processor is why this happened, nothing to do with software. I'll certainly agree with you if we talked about HTC's sense ...

Apple's ecosystem is a double-edged sword. In some regards, yes its excellent - in others its not. For instance, customising the device is something that android does brilliantly, allowing seemless changes without any forced requirement of buying through the Appstore. Secondly, while iTunes is a good platform - it forces the buyer to use it, even if they dont want to. This in some regards deliberately controls the user into either jailbreaking out of frustration, or swapping to an android handset.

You may not see it this way - certainly thats fine. But for someone who is not interested in Apple products, I dont agree with you.

Don't forget Steve Wozniak has even publicly mentioned (do a search) he actually likes a lot of Android features better than the iPhone.

I believe the iPhone is like the "Smartphone for Dummies". Like the books. Sure, you are completely locked in to what Apple and apps on iTunes allow you to do with it, but this also makes it a quite simple phone to get to grips with. I also like the proprietary dock connector believe it or not. I wish Android had a standard dock connector.

On the other hand, if you want the Swype keyboard which is much faster for text entry (example), a place where YOU get to decide what apps to install (unsigned, market or otherwise), and the ability to simply plug the handset into any USB host capable device to transfer music WITHOUT needing any external software (ah la iTunes), plus I could go on, get an Android. It is a smart phone for the slightly more sophisticated.

We have one iPhone here in the family, 3 Android handsets and two Android tablets. The iPhone sits in a dock and runs TuneIn radio app. That's about it.

Personal preference. I think the main reason the iPhone has such a high market share is because people do not understand the difference between "Smartphone" and "iPhone". When they look for their first "Smartphone", they immediately think of Apple. Can't fault their marketing. On the other hand when I'm about and about and using my SGS2 at customer's premises, I get curious looks, after which I have to explain all this and what I can do with the Android. Usually the comment is "Wish I would have known that". It's only the educated in this field that even know alternatives exist.
