Thanks Mr Conroy

It is sad but this will be a very small number to what will happen if Stephen Conroy gets his plan to destroy Telstra.

What a laugh

Don't use CONroy as an excuse Sydney. Telstra still hasn't finished with the Chosen 12,000 that Sol earmarked for the dole queue a couple of years ago. It will be interesting to see if Thodey reverses the trend and keeps some of those people on.

One other thing and this applies no matter what company is doing it: Sacking anyone at this time of the year is a horrendously inhumane act. I can accept that Bigpond (the owner of the Trading Post) is moving into the future by scrapping print and we are going to see most of not all printed newspapers go this route in the next 10 - 20 years but why not in June or July with three months notice, giving people time to seek alternative employment before the Christmas and New Year periods.

Being the boss doesn't mean one has to be a ****.

They broke it!

This is more to do with the fact that Telstra Media don't like print. TP in print was, and is, perfectly viable, considering that 80% of their revenue came from print last financial year. Unfortunately, the mechanisms were put in place to destroy the print version in favour of online - ie: 70% decline in ad volumes were mainly free ads being phased out. Many paying customers also got well and truly frustrated with the ill-fated new accounting system the was introduced and left for good. That's what caused the real decline!

Trading Post is a strong national icon and print brand. The online push is alienating many customers who only wish to advertise in print. Unfortunately Telstra broke it and couldn't fix it, so they've ditched it instead.

regards,
now unemployed.

Suppose it's Telstra's fault that the Argus is still not in print, or the Kings Cross Whisper.

@They broke it

No Stephen Conroy's fault according to Sydney and you other greedy TLS shareholders Mike Ne win.

Why not put the boot in further, to the poor person above now unemployed, thoughtless fool!

@they broke it.

Your incessant bagging of Telstra, in the hope that they will not succeed, certainly does not seem to support any argument that would help keep Telstra employees such as the above, gainfully employed with the company. Your attitude is unbelievable and disgusting, because no matter what anyone else has to say, if it is in support of Telstra, you are against it.

they broke it

Being gainfully employed for the last 7 yrs (& prior to Telstra purchase), I repeat, yes, it is their fault. The main reason the print side collapsed is primarily due to inefficient systems and un-reliable reporting systems that actually did drive away customers in their droves. Would you pay an invoice that arrives 2 years later for an incorrect amount? The refunds because of an untested accounting system siphened vast sums of money out the print revenue.
As employees, we were extremely loyal to the brand and customers in the face of massive amounts of consumer backlash over the last 2 yrs since the systems were introduced. This was further compounded by a series of bad management of the publication. In addition, their choice has been based on so called "online turnover at 20% total revenue" (rather print revenue re-diverted to look like it is online revenue). If the same bad management is followed through to online only, then it is possibly doomed to failure.

Now unemployed from original comment.

They Broke It

Seems to me that whoever owns a company has no obligation to keep their servants in hire when they decide to take windfall profits or any other profit for that matter -- from a project they built.
I've never seen the slaves own the plantation. They are usually grateful they had gainful employment for as long as they did.
